 TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1. Saturday, October 22.  To England

For those from the US: Connect from your home city to our international departure from New York City. In flight overnight.

Day 2. Sunday, October 23. Arrive London (D)

Arrive London. Clear Immigration, Baggage Claim and Customs. Meet our BMSJ Tour representative in the Arrival Hall. Depart London to Salisbury. Arrive and check in. Visit Salisbury Cathedral on your own. Group Welcome Dinner. Overnight Salisbury.

Day 3. Monday, October 24.  Stonehenge – Private Entrance/Avebury/ To Glastonbury (B/D)

Early morning departure to Stonehenge, on the nearby Salisbury Plain, the world's best-known stone monument from the Megalithic Age. Today it is cared for by the English Heritage, an independent body set up by Parliament in 1984 to protect England's archaeological and architectural heritage of more than 400 ancient and historic monuments. Stonehenge is a major World Heritage Site, and one of the world's most visited sacred sites. SACRED CEREMONY and MEDITATION: We enter the sacred and ancient circle for our private meditation time among the ancient and magical stones and their energies.

Then a visit to Avebury Stone circle, located about 15 miles away and part of the world's biggest and most complex monument of the Megalithic Age. The National Trust administers this World Heritage site on behalf of the British nation. It is an enormous circular earthwork, with a deep external ditch. Inside the ditch is a circle of immense standing stones, and inside that there are two more stone circles. Two stone avenues of about 100 megaliths run out from Avebury. Altogether there were some 600 megaliths, including those of the Sanctuary (which we will see later). Today its mysteries are still being explored and solved by multi-disciplinary scholars in archaeology, science and ancient religion.

Lunch on your own at a local restaurant. Continue to Glastonbury. Arrive and check in at your hotel. Free time to explore Glastonbury’s famous High Street on your own. Perhaps visit the local Goddess Temple for a private meditation.

Glastonbury is on a former island in the Somerset marshes - the fabled Isle of Avalon, in the heart of the Grail Legends. For centuries it has been the gathering place for priests and priestesses of the ancient Druid and Celtic traditions, as well as one of the holiest places in Christendom. It has been a megalithic center, a place of the Goddess, and was the inspiration for The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, as well as the television movie of the same name. We may well experience that Avalon is still looked over by the ancient Priestesses!

The small town of Glastonbury still preserves its long history and rich traditions, along with a uniquely blended atmosphere of modern times. It hosts a rock festival, several conferences and lots of events. People visit from the world over, pulled by a special something...just like you have been. Glastonbury is overlooked by the Tor, a majestic hill rising enigmatically above the flat surrounding meadows. However, it's no ordinary hill! It's home to the King of the Fairies, Gwyn ap Nudd (and he likes visitors!), and is one of the world's prominent sacred sites. Group Dinner. Overnight Glastonbury.

Day 4. Tuesday, October 25. In Glastonbury: The Tor, Chalice Well & Glastonbury Abbey (B)

Depart after breakfast and walk to Glastonbury Tor. Centuries of legends and folklore have centered around the Tor, the heart of Glastonbury. They all arrive at the same conclusion - that the Tor is a place where the veil between the worlds is thin. Strange experiences and "meetings" here could be interpreted as a fairy, a nature spirit, or a manifestation of a "spirit" from the other realms. Not everyone has these experiences, but they have been regularly reported by many visitors, as well as the locals. What culture is responsible for building the terracing on the slopes of Glastonbury Tor? Geoffrey Russell first proposed that it is the remains of a great three-dimensional neolithic labyrinth; this was expanded on by Geoffrey Ashe, the well-known Arthurian scholar. Many other researchers, as well as those of the Goddess Tradition believe it was a ceremonial way dedicated to the ancient Goddess. Participate in a sacred ceremony to “Part the Mists of Avalon.”

Afterwards, you descend the tour and walk to the nearby famous Chalice Well at the foot of the Tor. During the Middle Ages Glastonbury gained a great reputation as a place of healing, and the well was one of the centers where pilgrims came to take advantage of its curative powers. Even today the waters of both the Red Spring, or Blood Spring, at Chalice Well and the adjoining White Spring still have a reputation for their cleansing, healing and transformative qualities. Like pilgrims who have come here since ancient times seeking physical and emotional healing from its iron-red waters blessed by the Goddess, we too may receive our healings!

From the wellhead at the top of the garden, the first spot we reach when we enter at the bottom of the garden, we see the vesica pisces shaped pool that has Chalice Well water flowing into it through a series of flowing steps from the body of the Goddess Herself. The vesica pisces is one of the most fundamental symbols of sacred geometry, symbolizing the Sacred Marriage, the divine union of the male and female energies. While here at this sacred space, you will have time to meditate and reflect on your own divine union of the male and female energies within.

Lunch on your own at a local restaurant. Then your last stop is Glastonbury Abbey, where the graves of Arthur and Guinevere were said to have been found. St Mary's Chapel marks the site where Joseph of Arimathea established the first above-ground church in all of Christendom. The Celts had a deity named Easus who died and was supposed to come back to life. When the Druids heard about Jesus from Joseph of Arimathea, they saw the return of Easus in the story, and they gave Ynys Witrin, or Glastonbury, to him as a site for a church. This was the birthplace of Celtic Christianity, and grew to be a powerful pilgrimage site for Christians.

Return to the hotel. Dinner on your own. Overnight Glastonbury.

 Day 5. Wednesday, October 26.  To Cornwall: Tintagel & Merlin’s Cave. (B/D)

Depart after breakfast for Cornwall, where King Arthur is reputed to have been born. In brilliant light, surrounded by the sea, there are so many ancient chambered tombs and standing stones and ritual monuments where the land ends in Cornwall that it can seem like the fabled land far in the west where dead heroes reside. Arthurian legend knows this strange, enchanted land as Tristan's kingdom, Lyonnesse. For Tennyson, it was where Arthur fought his last terrible battle with Mordred; nearby is Loe Pool where Excalibur was hurled as Arthur lay fatally wounded. As Tennyson wrote: “So all day long the noise of battle rolled; Among the mountains by the winter sea; Until King Arthur's Table, man by man, Had fallen in Lyonnesse about their lord…”

We continue to Tintagel Castle, with its spectacular location on one of England’s most dramatic coastlines, the place where Uther Pendragon mated with Arthur’s mother, Igraine, and conceived the future king. Tintagel, one of the most awe-inspiring and romantic spots in all of England, is joined to the mainland only by a narrow neck of land. As we make our way through the ancient ruins, perhaps we’ll see through the veils to those days long past, when the great kings and queens lived here. We then view Merlin's Cave, a cave which legends maintain the spirit of the great Druid Merlin still inhabits. This spectacular area with its huge echoing cave is located under the rocks close to Tintagel Castle. If accessible, dependent on the tides, it will be the location of our sacred ceremony today; if not, we will view from above. Overnight Newquay - Cornwall.

Day 6. Thursday, October 27. Cornwall: St Michael’s Mount, Ten Table Monolith, Loe Pool and Land’s End (B)

Depart after breakfast to visit the following sites:

St. Michael’s Mount rises impressively from the low-tide sands of the beautiful Mount's Bay, a place of pilgrimage since dark age hermits claimed to have seen a vision of St Michael on the rock. A Celtic, then a Benedictine church were built upon the Mount; but the Mount derives its Arthurian fame as a major landmark of Tristan's legendary kingdom of Lyonnesse. The Mount's old Cornish name is Carrick luz en cuz - the 'old', or 'hoar', rock in the woods'. There are certainly traces of a petrified submerged forest around St Michael's Mount, affirming the legend that it was surrounded by thick woodland before Lyonnesse was drowned.

The beautiful and legendary Loe Pool, near St Michael's Mount, is not in fact an inland lake; instead it is a lagoon - an inlet of St Michael's Bay that has been separated from the sea by a large sand-bank known as the Loe Bar. Lunch on your own at a local restaurant.

On a small rise and just inland from Land's End is the famous Ten Table Monolith. The great flat menhir was the capstone of a now ruined megalithic tomb. Legend tells that Arthur and the four great British kings dined at this 'stone table' before leading a Cornish army against the Danes. The battle was known as Vellan Drucher, named after the nearby watermill that turned with Viking blood in the slaughter; not a Dane escaped. When Arthur returned to the stone to celebrate his victory, Merlin prophesied that the mill wheel would run red again, Arthur would dine with even more kings at Table Men for the last time and soon afterwards the world would end. Cornish folklore lends Table Men the power to ward off witchcraft.

Return to the hotel. Free time and dinner on your own. Overnight Newquay - Cornwall.
