The Legend of Mary Lee

There are many urban legends all over the world.  Stories of things that go bump in the night..  Stories about people too become urban legends.  This story is about just such a person; Mary Lee.  Mary Lee's story takes place in Louisville Kentucky sometime in the middle to lat 30's.  Mary was a beautiful girl in her late teens.  She stood 5ft 6 inches and weighed about a hundred pounds soaking wet.  Lovely long dark hair and big bright green eyes.  May was a loving girl and never met anyone she didn't like.

In the 1930, a tuberculosis epidemic hit Kentucky.  Many of the patients were sent to a place called Waverly Hills Sanitarium for treatment.  Mary, it is said, was a worker there at the hospital.  She would change sheets and clean patients.  Mary would help out doing most anything.  Mary would see people on a daily basis die.  Mary knew though that the disease wasn't all the time fatal, so she did what she could for the living; keeping them in good spirits and visiting with the patients when she wasn't working.  Mary lived at Waverly it is said in the wing where the nurses would stay.  I guess she considered Waverly her home.

However Mary's good nature would soon backfire on her.  Mary contracted the disease herself.  Mary became on of the patients herself at Waverly Hills.  Mary lingered for months coughing her lungs out daily.  Until one day she just gasped and took her final breath.  Mary died at the place she loved.  Her body it is said was cremated as many were back then.  Although Mary's body was gone, Mary's spirit  had other ideas.

It has now been 70 years since Mary's death.  The hospital  has been made into a toursite.  Many people who have visited the hospital have said to have seen Mary wondering around the 3rd floor.  Sometimes it is said that she even talks and says hello.  Other times people feel a tug on the back of their hair.

About four years ago, a local psychic went to Waverly to see if she could contact Mary.  The Psychic said that she made contact with Mary and Mary led her to the 3rd floor of the hospital.  The psychic said Mary showed her a spot in a brick wall.  When the psychic checked the wall she found some loose bricks.  She removed a few of the bricks and found some things.  She found a brush, a hair clasp, some shoes, and a picture.  The picture it is said is of Mary Lee.  In fact the picture is marked Mary Lee.

Last year I had the chance to visit Waverly.  I wanted to see if I could contact Mary Lee myself.  I walked around the building.  I was hoping to see the spirit of Mary Lee.  Finally , I just yelled out "Mary!...are you here?".  I could see a fine mist start to form.  The the form of a person appeared that looked to be a female.  "Mary is that you?", I asked.  Then the mist finished forming and Mary appeared to me.  I asked Mary if she wanted to go into the light.  Mary told me no.  That she wanted to remain with her family.  Her family being the souls left there from dying of TB.  Mary said she was happy; that Waverly was her only home and that she would stay forever.  I told Mary that there was those waiting for her in the light.  She just smiled and faded away.  I sensed that was her way of saying this conversation is over.  I came away though feeling that Mary's soul was not tormented; but that she was happy and that she was still helping out around the place.

Waverly Hall is a really active place and if you are ever in Louisville, Kentucky, contact the Louisville Ghost Hunters for a tour.
